I like to teach this enzyme mini-unit right before I teach aerobic cellular respiration, because enzymes and pathways really help students understand Glycolysis and the rest of Aerobic Cellular Respiration, beyond memorizing the reactants and products.
As in many of my products, I feel it is important to include content as well as question pages. So often if I find or buy a worksheet online, the content required for the questions is not included and it can be difficult for students to answer questions meant for a particular text or other resource. This is why I include what I call “Tutorials”, reading content with useful diagrams that can supplement textbooks and help teachers and students take a topic a little further.
Many of my questions are intended to get students to think deeper. These are not recall questions and students do not find them easy! They are challenging and I designed them this way. With lower level classes, the teacher may need to give students clues or lead them through a few questions to get them started. Only advanced students can complete these questions with no help.

2. A tutorial and question sheets for Free Energy Diagrams

3. A Paper Lab Activity
that only requires teacher-cut paper copies of a simple “substrate”, three pairs of scissors, and a stopwatch/phone with a timer. Students can graph their results and calculate their “enzyme” rates. There are also two separate extension activities for more advanced classes, one adds an inhibitor to their enzymatic reactions and one encourages them to bring their understanding of activation energy and free energy diagrams to their experiment. (15 pages)
4. Firefly Luciferase
– A Four Part Application Group Activity: Using a real life example of an enzyme, students calculate enzyme rates, they graph enzymatic rates vs temperature, they analyze a free energy diagram, and they model their own enzyme using modeling clay! You can do one activity at a time as a class or set up different learning areas of your classroom. This activity is very versatile and could be completed many different ways! (13 pages)
