Product Description
This activity is designed to help student conceptually understand the term epigenetics and how epigenetics plays a role in gene expression and cell differentiation. This activity was originally designed to be an engage activity for a cell differentiation lesson but can also be used as an introduction lesson for a unit on gene expression. It helps students understand that all cells have the same set of DNA (genome) but that each type of cell has different sets of genes turned on/off (epigenome) which results in the differentiation of that cell. In this activity, students will build a concrete model representing the epigenome from two different types of cells.

Materials
• White floral wire (one per group of 3 students)
• Skinny cylindrical objects such as nails, toothpicks, or Q-Tips
• Black and red marker
