Product Description
In this activity, students will identify equal fractions and match shaded fraction strips with the numbers that represent them.

In this four page activity, pages 1 and 2 have twenty-eight strips with shaded areas representing fractions. The fractions represented are 1/6, 2/12, 1/4, 2/8, 3/12, 1/3, 2/6, 3/9, 4/12, 1/2, 2/4, 3/6, 4/8, 6/12, 2/3, 4/6, 8/12, 3/4, 9/12, 5/6, 10/12, 2/2, 3/3, 4/4, 6/6, 12/12, 1/5, and 2/10. Pages 3 and 4 have twenty-eight spaces with fractions in the simplest form and a color in each space.

To complete the activity, students should cut out the strips from pages 1 and 2, then match the shaded strips to the fractions on pages 3 and 4. Since the fractions on pages 3 and 4 are in simplified form, some of the strips will be an exact match – 1/6 = 1/6 and some will be equal fractions – 2/12 = 1/6. The spaces on pages 3 and 4 are associated with specific fractions in the simplest form. Students should match the strips from pages 1 and 2 to the spaces on pages 3 and 4. Next, they should color the shaded portions of the strips the colors listed in the matching spaces on pages 3 and 4. After cutting out the strips and coloring the shaded portion the appropriate color, students should glue the strips to the correct spaces on pages 3 and 4.

We have included a student instruction sheet and color answer key so students may self-check. Answers will vary because more than one correct arrangement of the strips is possible. For example, on page 3 there are five possible equal fraction strips that would fit for 1/2, so students may choose to arrange their strips in different ways. The key we are providing shows the correct color of the strips on pages 1 and 2 and the fraction represented and appropriate simplified form.

Please check out our preview file, for a better look at the individual sheets and our student instruction page.
