This activity is designed to teach students how to identify whether equations and number combinations are equal or unequal using a balance scale and connecting cubes or blocks. This activity aligns with Virginia math SOL 2.22 which involves equality.
Adding and subtracting requires concrete manipulatives at the early stages of development which makes this activity a wonderful introduction to equality. Students use a balance scale to help determine whether two sets of numbers are equal or unequal.
Students will also practice writing the symbols for equal or not equal before they cut and sort.
