Product Description
Students explore expressions that take values as input and return values as output. This leads equations designed to answer the question: “What input produces the desired output?” Solving simple linear equations can be thought of as follows: Given a desired output, we perform inverse operations in reverse order to arrive at the needed input. This mission is aligned with Common Core State Standards: 6.EE.B.5, 6.EE.B.6, HAS.REI.A.1.

The fun stuff:
The genies have been summoned! This one takes your candies and transforms them according to a rule. Suppose you want 107 candies--how many do you have to give him? This scenario leads to the development of equations, and to one of the principle strategies for solving equations: reversing the order of operations to isolate x. A great mission that gives a context for why we use this strategy! There's also a short little history of algebra built in. Cool!

The zip file includes:
★The mission. (8 pages).
★A two-page Quick Start guide for teachers. Detailed and helpful!

The mission includes:
•Developing expressions to model the genie’s transformation of candies.
•A short history (a gistory?) of algebra.
•Reversing operations to find the “seed” number.
•Developing and solving equations based on the genie scenario.
•Carefully crafted practice problems.

We all have an innate curiosity about how the world works. We are wired to experiment at the edges of our knowledge, to look for patterns and to draw conclusions. Mistakes are the welcome surprises which help us refine the experiment. In a student-centered classroom, students collaborate to ask questions, gather data, interpret results and articulate understanding. Success at the edge of knowledge demands persistence and creativity. Courage To Core provides a context for students to work together to become the agents of their success and the owners of their cognition.
