This foldable shows the relationship between the different types of equations in one variable...
* one-step equations
* two-step equations
* equations with variables on both sides
* multi-step equations
To solve a multi-step equation, one must covert it to an equation with variables on both sides, then to a two-step equation, then to a one-step equation. As students master each type of equation they can then move onto a more difficult one.
I have students glue this foldable in at the beginning of the unit and as we cover each type of equation we go back and fill in the corresponding section as a class. Students no longer think of these different types of equations as separate concepts. Rather, they notice a relationship between them. It just involves converting to an easier form of an equation as you solve. This has helped tremendously and I hope you find it useful in your classroom.
