Need something right now to have your students practice solving equations with variables on both sides? How about this no/low prep digital sum of 3 (or 4) activity? This activity is completed on Google Forms.
Before class begins, post the link to the activity in either an email or class website for students.
During class, divide your students into groups of 3 or 4. Each student in the group will have a different equation to solve. Once they all solve their equation, they add their answers together and type that sum in the Google Form. If they are correct, they move on to the next set of problems. If they are incorrect, they trade papers and look over each other's work.
Benefits of the Sum of 3 (or 4) activity:
* Students are encouraged to communicate and find each other's mistakes.
* The success (and conclusion) of the activity depends on the students working together.
* The activity helps students to realize that they can ask their peers for assistance and not always depend on the teacher as the sole 'helper'.
