Practice solving equations with variables on both sides with rational number coefficients and constants with this fun activity! (TEKS 8.8C)
Students work in groups of 4. Place the “placemat” in a plastic sleeve in the middle of the table or group of desks. Each student completes one of the problems on the placemat. (The problem that is facing them). Once each students has a solution to their equation, they find the sum of their solutions and write the sum in the center of the placemat. This is the only number to check to know if they have all solved their problems correctly. If the sum is correct, the group gets another “placemat”. If their sum is incorrect, they rotate papers and try to find the mistake(s), correct them, and recalculate the sum.
This can also be used a race with other groups.
