Teachers could project or print the full page slides with the picture representation of equations to use in a whole group mini-lesson or in a guided math group. The teacher would think out loud to guide students in the thinking process needed
to work out the equation and then to compare the two equations to determine if the equations are equal or not equal.
If the cards are printed and laminated they could be used in a follow up math center.

Teachers could project or print the Candy Jar True or False Expression Cards. The teacher would think out loud to guide students in the thinking process needed to work out the expression and then to determine if the sum would match the
sum sitting inside the candy jar. This work could be done with the whole group or with a guided math group. If the cards are printed and laminated they could be used in a follow up math center.

Teachers would use the Candy Corn Comparing Expressions to help students understand the meaning of the equals sign.
Teachers would think out loud to clearly show students the thought process required. There are cards to help establish single equation use of the equal sign and cards to help students compare and contrast two equations to determine if they are equal or not equal.

The Candy Corn Expression Cards are used for playing a class game. Give each child a card. You call out the word, “Equal” or “Not Equal”. Students must then walk around the group and find another student holding a candy corn that would fit the
word you called out. Students could also use these cards at a center and make equivalent pairs or not equivalent pairs.

There are two student response pages. These could be used for practice and for assessment.
I hope your students find this work engaging as they learn how to work with addition equations.
