This is a great activity for the first week of school to set up groups and group norms and collaboration expectations. Students receive a square with an expression or problem that they must simplify or solve. There are 10 sets of 4 equivalent expressions/answers, so students must find their new group members by finding the other expression or answer that matches theirs. Your class will have a great conversation about order of operations, the structure of algebraic expressions, or the number of ways to express a single number as they work together on creating their own equivalent expressions. Instructions are included with sample sentence frames to create a safe environment.
