Before students start combining like terms, using distribution and solving multi-step equations, they need to understand that an expression like -3 – (-x) is the same thing as x – 3. This is a great activity to help students practice when particular expressions are equivalent or not. Students often don’t understand that –x + 6 is the same things as 6 - x. This gives them the practice they need to feel comfortable with this fundamental skill.
