This packet features 19 writing prompts for 11 books by Eric Carle, as well as 14 other prompts that you could use with any book. All books also have QR codes for the stories. Each QR code is on the writing prompt as well as in a QR code section for a Listening Center activity. I have also included prompts without QR codes if you prefer those.
Writing prompts provide children with the opportunity to apply purposeful writing, to express their thoughts and opinions, and to make both real life and text to text connections while writing about books. Students will make inferences about stories and cite specific evidence from the text to support answers, as well as summarize key details and ideas in a story.
The QR codes on the writing prompts allow the children to take the stories home with them to listen any time they want!
I have also included my Eric Carle Prezi in this packet which features videos and links to go with 21 of Eric Carle's books.
This packet of writing prompts aligns with and covers almost every single one of the ELA CCSS for Reading Literature, Reading Informational Text, Reading Foundational Skills, and Writing. Speaking and Listening Standards are also covered, as students listen carefully to the stories and share thoughts and ideas about the text both before and after completing the writing prompt.
The activities in this packet can be used many ways. You can make an Author Study packet if you are doing a unit on an author. I often use a prompt after we read a story as an extension activity for a writing lesson. It’s a great time for students to work on writing conventions and organizing thoughts. These prompts also are wonderful for sub plans or to use if you are a substitute teacher and want some extra activities to take with you. They can also be used as a homework activity.
I hope you enjoy them and find them as useful as I do!
