This final exam tests many different skill sets. The first section has a passage from the novel (One of our personal favorites and best passages in the novel to analyze) which has multiple choice questions to accompany it. These questions are higher order thinking questions and deal with plot, point of view, word choice, and other literary device. They are framed for the MA State Standards and are MCAS-like in nature.
The next part is an Open Response prompt from the same passage dealing with the topic of identity in the novel. Students must use text evidence to support their analysis and answer the question.
The third section is a plot diagram and students must put events from the novel in order on the diagram, using their knowledge of plot structure.
The last section deals with the Monomyth, or the Hero's Journey. Students use a word bank to put events from the novel in the correct order, using their knowledge of the Hero's Journey stages.
We modify this exam to use it with classes from Freshmen to Seniors. It is also modified for Special Needs students as there are word banks, multiple choice, and we give them a writing template to help with the Open Response.
It is a comprehensive final that will not only asses student's knowledge of the novel, Ready Player One, but will also address the many English Language Arts Common Core Standards and Blooms Taxonomy Higher Order Thinking Questions.
