This task was developed based on the mistakes that I saw when my sixth graders were factoring two addends. Error analysis is an excellent strategy to help students better understand concepts and to support analytical thinking. This task requires students to find and describe errors and to correctly rewrite the expressions. It includes 16 incorrectly factored expressions, a detailed answer key, a student response sheet that can be copied for each student, and a page with instructions in large print that can be posted in the classroom if students use their own notebook paper for their responses. It can be used as a teaching strategy to support 6.NS.B.4 (6th grade standard) or as an activation strategy prior to factoring binomials or polynomials. Two suggested ways to use this task:
• Divide desks into 8 groups and place 2 cards at each station (group). Have students rotate about every 4 or 5 minutes, depending on the needs your students;
• Post task cards around the classroom or hallway and have students go on a scavenger hunt to find and complete all 16 problems.
