Product Description
This is a game modeled after the “Escape Room” idea. Students are given a series of 5 tasks that they must solve in order to find the “code” to unlock 5 different locks that are attached to a lock box with some kind of reward inside.

It was BY FAR our kids’ favorite thing we did last year! It takes a little bit of preparation, but it’s so worth it to hear how excited the kids were and how much fun they had LEARNING!!

When we played it, students have to work together cooperatively to solve each of the tasks...one by one. We make them go in order starting with Task #1, but this is definitely not required. You, as the teacher, can decide what you want to do on that. As students unlock each lock, we require students to put the OPENED locks on “Lock Mat,” and instruct them not to play with the locks. (You will thank us for this later.) This helps keep the students from messing up the locks.

This game is a math game with 1st Grade TEKS, but could also be used as a review at the beginning of 2nd grade. We created this game to play after reading “Where the Wild Things” are.

The scenerio that students get is as follows:

You got stuck with Max on the island Where the Wild Things Are. You and Max want to go home, but can’t figure out how to get there. You find a box that has some locks on it. You find out that if you can unlock the box, you can give the candy in the box to the Wild Things, so they will help you find your boat, so you can get back home in time for supper.

It is up to you to complete the 5 Tasks to solve each mystery code and unlock each of the locks! Inside the box, you will find the treats.

You must put your best problem-solving and collaborating minds together if you want to be successful! Work as a team and take turns writing. Be warned, however, if you do not unlock the box in 30 minutes, you will have to live Where the Wild Things Are.....FOREVER! Your teacher will set a timer for you! Also...be sure to use any strategies you have learned. Your teacher has 3 hints for that she will share with you if you get stuck. Just raise your hand and give your teacher one of the Hint Cards.

There is some reading required, so we recommend you have some parent/adult/older student volunteers help each team with the reading part of the game, but just try to let the kids do the actual problem solving as much as possible.

To play this game with ACTUAL LOCKS, you will need the following materials:
2 three digit numerical locks
1 four digit numerical lock
5 digit letter lock that will spell the word “FOUND”
1 keyed lock
1 invisible ink pen or marker (optional...but makes it more fun)
1 black light (optional...but makes it more fun)
1 hasp lock
1 lock box...We used a tackle box from Walmart.

We spent around \$150 for 5 boxes of materials by buying from Amazon and Walmart.

OR a Breakout EDU kit that can be purchased for \$125 each at:

If you do not want to buy the locks and the kit, we have made an alternative way to play where the teacher check the students' code and they collect paper "keys" that make a puzzle with a lock on the back of the puzzle.
