Product Description
This is a game modeled after the “Escape Room” idea. Students are given a series of 5 tasks that they must solve in order to find the “code” to unlock 5 different locks that are attached to a lock box with some kind of reward inside.

If you do not have lock boxes, you can use the DIGITAL VERSION through a Google Form link that will be included in the product information download after you purchase.

This will lead you to make a copy of the Google Form that you can then assign to your students through Google Classroom or by giving them the link to follow.

It was BY FAR our kids’ favorite thing we’ve done! It takes a little bit of preparation, but it’s so worth it to hear how excited the kids were and how much fun they had LEARNING!! When we played it, students had to work together cooperatively to solve each of the tasks...one by one. We make them go in order starting with Task #1, but this is definitely not required. You, as the teacher, can decide what you want to do on that. As students unlock each lock, we require students to put the OPENED locks on the “Lock Mat,” and instruct them not to play with the locks. (You will thank us for this later.) This helps keep the students from messing up the locks.

This game is a math game with 3rd Grade TEKS, and we are using it as a review before our Unit Assessment. You could use it as a review anytime during the year. It would be a great “Relevant Review” at the end of the year.

The story that students get is as follows:

You and your friends went on a hiking trip, but have found yourselves lost along the trails. The park rangers have left a box along the trail that has a map to help you find your way back to the base camp site. However, the box is locked, so you and your friends must complete 5 tasks in order to unlock each of the locks on the box. Inside, you will find the map, and you will be on your way back to the base camp site where it is safe!

You must put your best problem-solving and collaborating minds together if you want to be successful! Work as a team and take turns writing. Be warned, however, if you do not unlock the box in ______ minutes, you forfeit the reward! Your teacher will set a timer for you! Also...be sure to use any strategies you have learned. Your teacher has 3 Hints that she will share with you if you get stuck. Just raise your hand and give your teacher one of the Hint Cards.

As you unlock a lock, lay it on the LOCK MAT. Please do not play with the locks.

To play this game with ACTUAL LOCKS, you will need the following materials:
1 three digit lock
1 directional lock (OR another three digit lock--The game will work with either.)
1 four digit numerical lock
5 digit letter lock that will spell the word “FOUND”
1 keyed lock
1 invisible ink pen or marker (optional...but makes it more fun)
1 black light (optional...but makes it more fun)
1 hasp lock
1 lock box...We used a tackle box from Walmart.

We spent around \$150 for 5 boxes of materials by buying from Amazon and Walmart.

OR a Breakout EDU kit that can be purchased for \$125 each at:
https://store.breakoutedu.com/products/breakout-edu-kit

If you do not want to buy the locks and the kit, we have made a digital Google Form that students can put their "codes" into to check. We've also made an alternative way to play where the teacher check the students' code and they collect paper "keys" that make a puzzle with a lock on the back of the puzzle.

Thank you,
Erica
