This Escape Room activity requires students to analyze the first chapter of novels with characters of various cultures around the world.
The first chapters are included in PDF format. This would be the preview pages for most novels on the Kindle edition.
Included are excerpts and escape room activities from the following novels:
Bad Boy: A Memoir by Walter Dean Myers
Water Buffalo Days
Amigas: Fifteen Candles
A Long Way Gone (for mature students due to civil war)
I am Malala
Students will work their way to escape each of the five continents by reading excerpts from the novels and answering a variety of questions about the literary elements and vocabulary from each text in order to solve for an "escape code" that breaks them out of that continent and into the next.
Students will "fly" from North America to Mexico to Africa to Asia to Europe and then back to North America would be their final flight/escape.
Passport printables and boarding passes as well as passport stamps are included.
Locks and boxes not necessary for this escape room. Just copies, cutting and optional laminating.
An anticipation guide to check students' global awareness
A letter to students introducing the escape room/global trek
A map/game board for students to record their "escape code words"
5 excerpts from 5 novels
2 powepoints for 2 activities
3 Word documents for 3 activities
A document with images of a passport, 5 separate boarding passes and 4 passport stamps for Mexico, Sudan, Korea and Germany as students travel the world through the novels to gain a global perspective.
The hope is that students will be given a broader worldview and increased desire to explore the world through literature.
This is a great introduction to the Unit One Collections curriculum by Holt McDougal to encourage students to pick an anchor text to read alongside the curriculum.
