Product Description
Are your kids loving Escape Rooms or Locked Box challenges? Mine beg for more! We call them Quests! STEM Quests are escape room missions that involve solving riddles and tasks to find clues to open a locked box. Students work together to find the keywords that lead to the needed information to unlock a lock.

For this Quest, the information within the tasks is all about the United States Space Shuttle Missions. It’s an Unlock the Box Challenge with a Science-based theme! And it includes a STEM Challenge!

Box 1 will be solved by students reading through a data table containing information about all the shuttle missions. Their task to place certain events in chronological order which reveals a clue. After unlocking the box, they are led to Box 2. This one involves solving math problems to cover the next clue. Box 3 has a clue they can find by using a United States map to track specific locations astronauts might have seen as their orbit passed over the USA.

You will need three locks for this quest. You need two number locks and one lock with a key. Directions are included to use this set without these locks! You will also need three boxes. This can be a plastic or metal toolbox, but any box will work! Directions and photos are included for how to set up the boxes and locks or how to use a version without locks.

Included in this resource you will find a table of contents, and 3 pages of tips and tricks for setting up everything. For Box 1- teacher directions with photos, student directions, Shuttle Missions Data table, event cards, clue cards, and box labels. For Box 2- teacher directions with photos, math pages in two versions with answer keys, clue cards for your display, and box labels. For Box 3 – teacher directions with photos, Mission log, maps in several versions with an answer key, and box labels. Miscellaneous forms include Hint cards for each task, an alternative locking system (made of paper), a Planning Check-off Page, Certificates to award students completing the task, and all pages are provided in a black and white version. Check the preview to see everything!

There is MORE! A STEM Challenge is included. Students will design a Space Robot following constraints requiring the robot to be useful for astronauts. The Challenge file includes three pages of teacher directions, two forms of editable constraints, an editable lab sheet, an editable rubric, and photos. It's a perfect way to culminate this Escape Room event.

This Quest was tested with fifth graders. It would be great for 4th-5th grade. Some items are provided in two ability levels. Three pages of hints and tips will guide you through using this resource. It’s a highly engaging activity that will create a busy-ness in your classroom that is so much fun. Comments from my students include:
• “This is the most fun I have ever had in STEM class!”
• “I lived every part of this. It made me use some thinking.”
• “We loved that it made us really work as a team.”
