Cross-Curricular Cooperative Learning: U.S. History and Language Arts
Language Arts: fiction elements, connotations, literary devices, inference, drawing conclusions; U.S. History: WWI trench warfare
These 2 days of activities have proven to be successful, fun, and educational, as we reviewed for our Fiction Summative/Test. It may also be used as an exciting review for State Testing. This activity engaged all readers (SpEd, ELL's, ELswD/ D.I., General, Gifted), which prompted me to create more SOL/ State Testing Escape Room activities you will see on my page soon!
This product mimics an escape room that simulates a WWI trench warfare fictional scenario. Students are given clues by the teacher to find, read, and answer questions for the 6 Excerpts hidden around the room. In order to move to the next excerpt or step, students must answer the Language Arts' multiple choice questions correctly with support.
For an extension: As a Language Arts teacher, I paired with the History teacher. Students entered my Escape Room, then they went to History where we transformed the classroom into a trench with sounds, sprayed water for rain, flashes of light, and tasks with the use of flashlights, such as writing a letter home and viewing and recording their thoughts about primary sources (photos, documents, letters, etc.).
