What a fabulous way to celebrate sporting events of the winter! This Escape Room covers many sports and with tasks that include math, using maps, and matching descriptions to images. This is an Escape Room that involves solving riddles and tasks to find clues to open a locked box. Students work together to find the keywords that lead to the needed information to unlock a lock.

NOTE: This Escape Room is available in a money-saving bundle!

This resource includes many winter sports- with images and activities. However, a specific sporting event is not mentioned by name which makes this set reusable. Print, laminate, and store this resource so you can use it year after year!

Here's how it works!

  • Unlocking Box 1 will be solved by students completing math problems and following the clues to a poster display where they will find the lock code. After unlocking the box, they grab the items for Task 2.
  • This one involves using a map grid and detailed directions to move over the map which leads to a specific map location and a poster that displays the lock code.
  • Task 3 has students matching certain winter sports images to their descriptions. If this is done correctly they will spell a word that leads to a poster and the lock code for the last box.

BUT there is MORE! Included in this Escape Room is a STEM Challenge!

You can use the challenge as a stand-alone project or use it with the Escape Room.

This Quick Challenge is to build a ski lift chair and the skier that will ride in the chair. Students will place the lift chairs on a lift line you create (using string) and watch all the chairs ride to the top!

NOTE: You will need three number locks for this event. You will also need three boxes. This can be a plastic or metal toolbox, but any box will work- even a cardboard box! Directions and photos are included for how to set up the boxes and locks or how to use a version without locks. You do not need 3 boxes and 3 locks per group! It’s three boxes and three locks for the entire class.

Directions are included to use this set without these locks! A bubble-in paper is included for students to use instead of real locks.

Included in this resource, you will find:

  • Table of contents and 3 pages of tips and tricks for setting up the event.
  • For Box 1- two versions of teacher directions with photos, two versions of student directions, two versions of the math task (with answer keys), a poster of a skier, and box labels.
  • For Box 2- teacher directions with photos, map grid directions, map grid, answer sheet, a poster of a skiing sporting event, and box labels.
  • For Box 3 – teacher directions with photos, athlete image cards, athlete description cards, a poster of a ski lift, and box labels.
  • Miscellaneous forms include Hint cards for each task, an alternative locking system (made of paper), a Planning Check-off sheet, Certificates to award students completing the task, two extra posters to make the Escape Room more difficult, and all pages are provided in a black and white version.

Included in the STEM Challenge file you will find:

  • Overview and hints page
  • 3 pages of teacher directions
  • criteria cards for student use
  • lab sheet with an answer sample
  • three pages of photos
  • scoring rubric
  • The scoring rubric, lab sheet, and criteria cards are editable.

Materials needed for the STEM Challenge include craft sticks, straws, string, clothespins, cotton swabs, scrap construction paper, foil, and masking tape.

Check the preview to see everything!

YOUR PREP includes:

  • Copying, laminating, and displaying three posters
  • Copying the math page of your choice
  • Copying and laminating the map and grid directions
  • Copying, laminating, and cutting apart sports images and descriptions.
  • Setting up boxes with labels and locks
  • OPTIONAL: additional posters, certificates, hint cards

One more thing to note: This was tested with fifth graders! The math task is provided in two ability levels. The easier version of the math could easily be completed by fourth graders. The harder version will be for fifth and sixth graders.

Three pages of hints and tips will guide you through using this resource. It’s a highly engaging activity that will create a busy-ness in your classroom that is so much fun.

Comments from my students include:

  • “The math was challenging and we wanted to get it finished so we could unlock that first box.”
  • “These are my favorite things we do in STEM.”
