Description

Is there any such thing as too much practice with irregular past tense verbs? In this game students move from one side of the board to the other by making past tense sentences using irregular verbs. A paper version of this game is also available. More details about the game are available this blog post.

To use the game, the file must remain in editing mode, or pieces will become locked in place and students will not be able to type on them. You'll need a copy for each group of students (2-4) and you'll need to give them editing rights when you share it. If you want to be able to look at their questions and answers later, be sure to tell them how to return the game to you when finished.

Directions:

Students choose one side from which to start. Only one student may start from any given side.

Students may choose any verb, on their chosen side, from which to start.

On a student’s turn, he/she follows these steps:

  1. Indicate which square you would like to claim. Squares must have at least one side touching a square which already belongs to you.
  2. Drag one of the larger covers over the square you would like to claim.
  3. Double click inside the cover and type a past tense sentence using the word in the square.
  4. If the sentence is grammatically correct, leave the cover in place. If the sentence is not grammatically correct, remove the cover.

The goal is to reach the opposite side of the grid. The first player to reach the opposite side is the winner.

As an added bonus, the digital version includes a second playing option: Escape! The Irregular Verb Grid Bridges Edition. In the bridges edition, students have five "bridges" they can use to cross over a previously claimed square.

If a student wishes to claim a previously claimed square, he/she may do so using a bridge.

  1. Drag one of the smaller covers over the previously claimed square you’d like to cross.
  2. Double click inside the smaller cover and type a present tense sentence using the verb from the previous sentence.

Note: bridges are limited to five per player, use them wisely.

The goal is to reach the opposite side of the grid. The first player to reach the opposite side is the winner.
