This is a game modeled after the “Escape Room” idea.
Students are given a series of 5 Language Arts EDITING tasks that they must solve in order to find the “code” to unlock 5 different locks that are attached to a lock box with some kind of reward inside. There are a total of 22 editing questions included, mostly in Task Card format. This is a great way to review for an assessment. We use it to review the TEKS for the STAAR Writing Assessment, but it will work for any grammar assessment!
If you do not have lock boxes, you can use the Google Form at a link that will be included in the instructions when you make your purchase.
This will lead you to make a copy of the Google Form that you can then assign to your students through Google Classroom or by giving them the link to follow.
It was BY FAR our kids’ favorite thing we’ve done! It takes a little bit of preparation, but it’s so worth it to hear how excited the kids were and how much fun they had LEARNING!! When we played it, students had to work together cooperatively to solve each of the tasks...one by one.
This game is an EDITING grammar review for 4th Grade Language Arts.
To play this game with ACTUAL LOCKS, you will need the following materials:
1 three digit lock
1 directional lock OR another three digit lock--The game will work with either.
1 four digit numerical lock
5 digit letter lock that will spell the word “LASER” OR a 5 digit lock (4 letters + 1 number) that spells PAWN3 (If your word lock is different, we have included a blank secret code for you to use to match your lock!)
1 keyed lock
1 invisible ink pen or marker (optional...but makes it more fun)
1 black light (optional...but makes it more fun)
1 hasp lock
1 lock box...We used a tackle box from Walmart.
We spent around $150 for 5 boxes of materials by buying from Amazon and Walmart.
OR a Breakout EDU kit that can be purchased for $125 each at:
If you do not want to buy the locks and the kit, we have made a digital Google Form that students can put their "codes" into to check.
It’s difficult to put the instructions in writing, so if you have any questions, please email me. Please download the Preview to help you get a better idea of what is included.
