    Description

An Escape Room event in the elementary classroom is a great way to practice so many skills. This one includes math, categorizing topics, and deciphering a secret code. Students don’t even realize they are practicing! What is different about the paper/pencil escape room? It is simple! Students complete tasks to earn a method of ‘escaping’. The prep for the events with NO LOCKS is minimal- just making copies. No locks or boxes!

NOTE: This resource is available in a money-saving bundle:

    The Escape Room

This event is called Escape the Blizzard. Students will complete 4 tasks. Each task will lead to an answer- either a number, symbols, or words. When the answer is shown to you, students have unlocked that task and will be awarded a snowflake. After getting through the last task the team has Escaped the Blizzard.

The scenario for students is: They are hiking through a canyon when it begins to snow. To escape this snowstorm they must complete four tasks. After each task is finished the team is awarded a snowflake. When all four snowflakes have been earned the team has escaped!

Tasks that must be completed are:

    • For the first task, students complete math problems that provide the answer to a riddle.
    • For the second task, students place listed items in categories and solve a puzzle.
    • For the third task, students decipher a secret code message.
    • For the fourth task, students complete math problems, including identifying palindromes.

Included in this resource, you will find:

    • Table of contents
    • Overview and Tips page
    • Check-off sheet for planning and prep

    STEM Challenge- Build a Snowman

This challenge is to build a model of a snowman using only a few supplies. One is the newspaper for the snowman frame and the other is tissue to cover the snowman. Students will also decorate their snowman in typical clothing or other décor. Will students build wide and round models or tall, thin models? Can they get the snowman to stand up? Will they make great decisions about how to use the materials? This is a fabulous challenge that is a lot more difficult than you would expect. My students were quite surprised about how hard this challenge turned out to be! There is a lot of creativity with this STEM challenge- in fact, we could easily call this one a STEAM task.

You will need supplies in addition to this package. This includes newspaper or art paper, rolls of toilet tissue, masking tape, scissors, white glue (optional), and construction paper in many colors.

    The package specifically includes:

    • Cover
    • Teacher background
    • Materials and preparation page
    • 5 pages of teacher directions
    • Constraints list
    • 4 pages of photographs
    • 2 versions of a lab sheet
    • Scoring rubric
    • Terms of Use

All forms are provided in an editable format. Student answer sheets are not included, but samples from student work are included in the teacher direction pages. The page count listed for this package includes everything.

This challenge will need 1-2 class sessions to complete.
