Thank you for using the Eskwela Pinoy enrichment curriculum! This curriculums set contains 23 cultural enrichment lessons with extensions that can be easily implemented by an afterschool/summer program practitioner. The purpose of this curriculum is to provide for afterschool and summer instructors:
1. A series of Filipino cultural lessons that have an intentional focus and align with the academic concepts for various grade levels.
2. Lessons that are easy to follow and implement.
3. Lessons that are truly enriching, innovative, engaging and tell the history of the Philippines for youth.
4. The essential information needed to be effective afterschool/summer instructors who maximize the time spent with the youth by providing cultural lessons that are inspired by Philippine History.
The Eskwela Pinoy lessons are geared towards students in grades kindergarten through eighth and are inspired by Filipino traditions and holidays. For each month, there are 2 lessons and each lesson indicates the grade level it is designed for. One lesson per month is geared towards the younger grade span (grades kindergarten thru 4th grade) and the second lesson is geared towards the older grade spans (grades 5th thru 8th grade).
Each lesson is quite comprehensive. Each lesson is aligned to Common Core Standards for the lesson’s grade level focus. Each lesson includes step-by-step instructions, time it takes to complete the lesson, a list of materials, recommended books for students to accompany the lesson, and in some cases an image to visually show the lessons outcome or process. Lastly, each lesson includes a list of extension activities to implement. The extension activities focus on the following areas and are color coded for easy recognition: English-Language Arts, Math, Culinary, Parent connection, STEM, Language and Nutrition/Physical Activity.
Each lesson is intended to take one enrichment period to complete or in other words at least one hour (certain lessons are longer). This can be a lesson during one session of the week in an afterschool or summer program or as a weekend or Saturday enrichment class session. Each extension activity for a lesson is also intended to take at least one enrichment period to complete. This curriculum is designed so that if one lesson is implemented as well as all of its extension activities, that would provide a week’s worth or five days worth of afterschool enrichment activities/lessons.
