★ 51 personal photographs from Mallorca, Spain of menus and signs to coordinate with the food unit. These menus and signs are great to spark conversation about tapas; regional foods (like jamón serrano, paella, pa amb oli); meal times; “menú del día” and courses; official languages of Spain; the conversion of Euros to dollars; the use of the comma in place of the decimal; military time; IVA; portion sizes compared to U.S. standards; tourism; etc. Choose a slide to use as a bell-ringer or a hook, or to generate critical thinking and comparisons to the U.S. culture.
★ A food project! Explanation of the requirements for a written portion, a speaking portion, and the preparation of a recipe. The written and speaking portions use the preterite, the past progressive and the subjunctive (all of which coincide with Expresate chapter 4). I have included sample recipes that your students might like to try. Rubrics for each part of the project are also included.
★ A creative writing assignment that helps the students work on their pre-writing skills and brainstorming. The students then use their pre-writing to create a 4-line rhyme scheme about their favorite food. Included: an explanation of the project and its requirements (in Spanish), brainstorming graphic organizer, sample work from my students, rubric
★ 3 role-play situations for the students to act out in groups of 2-3
★ A file that will help you organize a field trip to a Mexican restaurant for your class(es). Included: rationale/standards met (proposal for the Administration and/or School Board), sample menu to practice vocabulary, a few slang expressions (just for fun!), spreadsheet to keep track of permission forms/allergies/order/cost/etc.
★ A really cool Mexican rap that I found online...centered around typical Mexican dishes! Great find! Vocabulary, culture, listening practice all rolled into one! I put together a listening comprehension activity that the students can fill out while or after watching the video a couple of times. I also included the lyrics and the answer key.
