Included in PPT is vocabulary, review Hyperbole, and comprehension question. I use this PPT to guide the lesson. Using Anita Archer vocabulary formats, I go over words that students need to understand which are vital to understanding text as well as might be used or heard with frequency. Then close read the chapter. Depending on time of year we are reading novel, I will read aloud the first read through or students can share read it to become familiar with text. During second read (usually limited to 3-4 minutes, students read for fluency using reading phones or partners. This read through is not intended to read complete chapter, and I assign a focus to fluency (accuracy, expression, or phrasing). The third read through is used to gauge other vocabulary needs that kids are having a difficult time understanding. Students read another 4-5 minutes writing in their journal words they do not understand or have a difficult time pronouncing. I walk around and make a running list of words I observe that many students are having a difficult time with.
The PowerPoint then guides students on a hunt for a hyperbole and a reflection question students can discuss, think through, and/or write about.
