This is a scaffold-ed activity set integrating non-fiction into Esperanza Rising. I take the first paragraph and model it as a whole class and then partner students in pairs and they complete the second paragraph together. The third paragraph activity is done alone and that is what I use as my mid-module assessment.
**note: I also teach figurative language when I do this, so students are prepared for the modules.
**Also note: This activity is done over 3 separate days and I break them up so it isn't so monotonous.
