This is a 1-page flipchart for the Promethean Board relating to one of the Major Themes in Esperanza Rising: "there is no rose without thorns" or there is no life without difficulties.
The second page of the flipchart includes a printable sheet for the students to fill out.
The activity is to provide evidence of the theme "there is no rose without thorns" within Esperanza Rising. The students should be prompted to add 1 difficulty that young Esperanza has faced throughout the book for every thorn on the rose picture. I have students draw lines to keep it neat. For example, evidence that can be listed from the text to show these "thorns" can include: Papa's death, the Uncles threats, the Ranch burning down, leaving Abuelita behind, etc. The students come up with the key evidence and write them down on each thorn as a class. The teacher writes them on the Promethean Board flipchart as the students list them to serve as a guide for the students.
It is recommended that this activity is started after reading at least 2 chapters to allow there to be thorns that have happened in the story.
This can be an ongoing activity through the book. I have the students color the rose when finished with the activity.
