When I first decided to use Esperanza Rising as a novel study for literature circle groups, I poked around online for unit planning guides or ideas for how to use the book with my fifth graders. I wasn’t happy with much that I found, so I put my own unit together. Using it with my students for a couple of years, I have worked out a few kinks and added to the end of unit project options.
This unit plan includes:
A complete description of how I teach this novel in my classroom
A list of four writing prompts for each chapter
A worksheet for students to take notes by chapter
Three quizzes (with answer keys for each)
Five end of unit project options (with scoring criteria for each)
