As a special education teacher I am constantly trying to support my students in their efforts to work on grade level content. (CCSS!) :)
Our school uses Expeditionary Learning for the language arts curriculum and Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan is one of our 5th grade novels. This is a challenging book for the special education students, but the CLOZE activities I've created help the students to comprehend the text. Once students have a good handle on the novel they can start to think beyond the "right there" questions.
You can use these CLOZE activities to differentiate your instruction. Copy with the word banks for your struggling readers, fold the word banks over and copy for typical students and ask your advanced students to summarize the chapters independently.
The document is 36 pages, The first 18 are the student sheets and the second 18 are a duplicate with answers.
