Creating an essay outline for any formal English essay or research paper is easy using this inquiry-based writing process! Students will “unlock” their thesis statement to create topic sentences and logically-sequenced ideas.

So, how does this work? After writing a thesis statement, students will ask who, what, where, when, why, and how questions about their claim. After generating questions, it's time to categorize and organize. Gather evidence to answer the questions and, presto-chango, students have written topic sentences and, most importantly, worked through a student-led writing process that makes sense. Bonus: students will see the powerful role inquiry plays in writing and gain confidence as writers!

This is the logical next step following Close Reading Analysis and one that students find incredibly helpful for their paper organization.
