This handy 2 page sheet shows students exactly how to write an essay outline. The page has areas for students to write their Thesis Statement, Topic Sentences, Facts, and Elaboration.
There are directions on the page itself that clearly spell out to the student how to write each section. For example, the thesis area tells students that their thesis statements should:
1. Give your “overall answer” to question.
2. Introduce 3 topics
3. Show analysis on those topics – HOW each topic supports overall answer
Also, the page shows students an example of a Thesis Statement and Topic Sentence to show students how their sentences should look. The example question on the sheet is a History example - "Describe the effects that the Industrial Revolution had on urban areas." - however the examples can be changed for any subject area.
Whenever my students write an essay, I give them this outline frame to help them write their outlines. They tell me it's a great tool that is very helpful. I have even had students come back in latter years and ask me for an outline frame to help them with their essays in their other classes!
