Based on the 6 traits, this collaborative lesson allows students to examine a variety of essays written by their peers, discuss the strengths and weaknesses, and return the paper with a thorough yet simple overview of what the student writer needs to work on. This gives the reviewers an opportunity to be exposed to both strong and weak essays and walk away with a good understanding of what needs to be done to write effectively.
I have included an instruction sheet, as well as the peer review form (2 pages). The instruction sheet is available as a preview download.
You need one highlighter per group for this lesson.
When you assign the essay, have students write their I.D. numbers or a special code on the essay so they're not embarrassed by having their names on them.
Make sure you do the peer review using a sample essay (overhead) with the entire class before you put them into groups so they know what to expect.
