In preparation for my state’s end of year testing (the SAGE), I was struggling teaching my students how to approach the writing portion of the test. I knew that their writing was a little weak, but couldn’t find a resource exactly like I wanted; I couldn’t find the perfect tool to help them. They were struggling with knowing what to write, who the audience was, and fulfilling the exact task of the prompt. This flow chart provides students with a map to follow to help them remain focused on the prompt and completely do as the prompt states.
There are 25 example prompts for students to practice using the flow chart. The prompts can easily be given to the students as an opportunity to use the Break Down and graphic organizer for essay completion.
The HIT PEET graphic organizer is something I developed as a tool for my students to use for any writing assignment. It had a simple enough acronym I knew my students could remember it and recreate it on their own any time. But I also knew that it had an awesome framework to help them write a well organized, well thought out essay.
