I use this resource in my classroom with every essay students write!
I use the handout to guide students through a mini lesson on tips for editing & revision, and then let students go to town polishing up their work. This guide gets kids thinking about how to see their writing with "fresh eyes," and provides them with actionable tips for making their way through the stages of the writing process.
This 2-page handout is an editable PDF file that can be tailored to reflect the requirements of the essay your students are revising. You can customize the PDF by typing in a checklist of essay elements specific to your needs. A sample is included so you can see how I've previously used this checklist in my classroom.
This guide is Common Core-aligned and contains CCSS-specific learning targets.
This lesson helps students become proficient in the following Common-Core learning targets:
• I can apply revision strategies independently and with the help of others.
• I can edit my writing by checking for errors in capitalization, punctuation, grammar, spelling, etc.
• I can analyze my writing to determine if my purpose and audience have been fully addressed and revise when necessary.
• I can prepare multiple drafts using revisions and edits to develop and strengthen my writing.
Cheers to you and your student writers!
