Teachers often hesitate to assign essays or include them on their tests because they are so time consuming to grade. Utilizing a simple rubric, you can allow students to grade their own papers, which you can then easily review. Using a highlighter, students should highlight the first 3 words of the sentence in their essay that corresponds to the numbered essay "fact". They should then note the letter of the "fact" in the margin on left next to the appropriate sentence. Once they have completed the process, you can quickly review the essay and see areas in which students need further direction. The letter "M" is reserved for miscellaneous information that can be incorporated into the essay.
This process is effective because students immediately see the information they should have included in the essay, and the teacher has a grade in a timely manner. Monitoring students by waking around the room is essential to the use of an essay rubric in the classroom.
