This application allows a student to paste in an essay and receive comments on stylistic weaknesses such as stale or trite language, simplistic vocabulary, choppy sentences, incorrect point of view, and overuse of passive voice. It also gives them a grade, based on these areas of weakness. It does NOT grade for content, paragraph structuring or grammatical errors, or anything else.
It started out as a coding experiment, but has been a mainstay in my classroom for years. I require (or just encourage) students to get a certain grade, and they use it over and over--revising like mad--until they achieve the grade required. They then print it out for points added to their essays.
If you're looking for a full-blown essay grading program, this isn't it. But if you want a cheap and simple way to make your students more conscious of basic stylistic elements in their essays, give it a try! (It's priced for that ;-)
You're welcome to put it on all your computers in the classroom, at home, etc. Works on all Windows machines. Sorry, no Macs.
