I took most of my essay writing materials and bundled them into this fourteen page, helpful document. Inside, you will find fourteen pages containing these writing resources:
✔ Notes and a handout for an interactive lecture on basic essay components; the lecture notes are simple and clear for your use, and students fill out their handout as they listen.
✔ A multiple choice "parts of the essay" quiz with answer key for assessing what students learned from the interactive lecture on essay basics.
✔ A student friendly outline that allows students to brainstorm and plan an essay.
✔ An MLA formatted outline to introduce students to a more structured, formatted outline.
✔ A thesis statement/sub-topics brainstorming handout that allows students to construct a thesis and plan paragraphs in a more visual fashion.
✔ Another thesis statement organizer (see which format kids like best).
✔ A peer editing sheet that students can use to provide feedback on peer drafts.
✔ A rubric for the analytical essay that you can use to grade drafts.
→ I tried to organize these documents so they mirror the sequence of the unit. I start by introducing students to the basic analytical essay, and then I cover brainstorming, thesis construction, and outlining. After they compose, the peer editing document and rubric will take care of assessment. Check out the preview to see what you will get.
