This is a guided writing lesson plan and worksheet activity.
Students analyse the model text and are then taken carefully through the stages of planning and writing their own essay.
The topic is children and technology.
Students are asked to identify and create topic sentences with supporting details and a conclusion using a visual planner and model.
The objective is to provide a very tightly controlled planning and production sequence. The final task is uncontrolled, and students are expected to apply what they have learnt. There is a template at the back which can be used over and over again by setting different for and against essay questions until students are able to produce quality essays independently.
The aim of this activity is to teach students how to plan and organize a simple ‘for and against’ essay. A short essay is given at the beginning as a model and students are led into analysing it to identify various parts of the essay which they will be expected to incorporate into their own work at the end.
There are some jumbled sentences focusing on the conjunction ‘so’ and some open ended questions intended to help build ideas and material for the students to use in their final production.
Although this material is a self contained lesson to a degree, it is assumed the students already know about the structure of simple paragraphs and essays in terms of topic and concluding sentences with supporting details.
