The editable house plan can be used to structure one paragraph using one column or multiple columns for multiple paragraphs. The third colum is an example of a student in progress. I let the students decorate the houses according to time of year. I also ask them to write in full sentences within the house plan and then use the house plan to guide papers. The metaphor works well when discussing that a thesis statement covers like a roof, your proof holds up the thesis like columns hold up the roof and the conclusion should be what you stand on, including new findings like furniture on the floor that you add after building. Students also use this to help keep track of resources and citations in order to prevent plagiarism.
