This is a great activity I use to familiarize students with the following terms: claim, evidence, reasoning, thesis statement, transitions, clincher, hook, etc.
It includes a sample 5 paragraph persuasive essay and asks students to read through and label each of the terms when they spot them. It gives some explanation of the terms at the top I usually have them work in pairs or groups of 3 to label them, then discuss it full class. Then, it includes an extension writing activity where students are to respond to a persuasive prompt using the organization skills learned in this activity. The activity correlates with writing terminology included in the Common Core Standards: it's all about writing to persuade and backing up claims with evidence and reasoning.
These two activities could last anywhere from two days to a week, depending on the length you prescribe for their essay and how many days you'd want to give them at school to complete it.
