This single page of essay topics and the 5-paragraph essay format has it all! There are 16 topic choices given, with an option for students to pick their own (with teacher clearance of course). As well, the 5-paragraph essay format is reiterated in a short reminder, as we've usually already covered its structure in previous classes (but students always benefit when they have a visual to refer to). Lastly, there are a few things noted that students should consider when writing their essay, including capitals, spelling, grammar, etc. The topics are all ones that students tend to have strong opinions on, one way or the other, and the assignment is not so overwhelmingly daunting that they quit before they even begin. With a rough copy due date and a good copy due date right on the sheet, it helps our more disorganized students to keep on track better. I find that the word 'essay' often brings unnecessary terror to my students, but this first foray into it, with a subject they can get on board with, is usually a positive experience. Note: Essays of this type lead wonderfully in to speech writing and delivery!
