This bundle includes 3 lesson plans, one for each of the three parts of the essay: Introduction, Body, and Conclusion. I find students of all ages have a hard time when it comes to organizing their writing, and this structured package, with one lesson focusing on each part, has helped my students.
The body paragraph lesson passed a formal observation by my administrator.
The lessons use the workshop model: There is an Aim, Do Now, Mini lesson, whole class practice, individual or partnered practice, and homework. These lessons were used in conjunction with the students each writing their own feature articles. You can do the same or use the lessons to teach any other type of essay or article.
Highlights include the use of visuals, humor, and relating to the students’ own interests to help them with the topic. I also elicit questions and answers from the students as much as possible, rather than “lecturing.”
Each lesson has a checkbox for the teacher to circle which standards they are using in the lesson. While they list ESL standards and were used in a classroom with ESL students, these lessons are appropriate for students of all abilities. They were designed for use in a diverse classroom with students who ranged from speaking no English, to being fluent native speakers.
