So begins the Declaration of Independence. But what was the Declaration of Independence? Why do Americans continue to celebrate July 4, 1776 as the birthday of the United States? The United States Constitution was not signed until 1789, some 13 years later!
While that date might just mean a barbecue and fireworks to some today, what did the Declaration of Independence mean when it was written in the summer of 1776?
