Common Core Standards: 8.NS.2

This activity is a fun card sort that will help students practice estimating the values of irrational numbers and placing them on a number line. Students will match an irrational square root to a number line with a marked point. The activity has options for differentiation and self-checking built in. This is a great activity for math centers since students can check themselves and work with a partner.

The basic activity uses a set of square roots and a set of number lines that students must match. For a more rigorous extension, a set of blank cards is provided for students to generate decimal estimates of the square roots. You can also choose to only distribute partial sets at a time for struggling learners. (The square root and number line cards are in the same order.)
