Instead of doing another boring worksheet, try a scavenger hunt and get the kids out of their seats and moving around while they estimate square roots! This self-checking scavenger hunt contains eleven problems that require students to estimate a square root that is NOT A PERFECT SQUARE! They must decide between which two integers the answer would fall. My students are always highly engaged when I use a scavenger hunt!
Post the pages around your room in a random order. The students may start on any letter they choose. They first solve the problem on the top of the page. They can organize their progress and show all of their work on the accompanying student work page. Then, they are to find the answer to their problem on the bottom of another page. They then solve the problem on the top of that page. They continue around the room until they return to the first page where they started their scavenger hunt. Starting with the “D" page the pages spell DOGMATIZERS when solved in the correct order. Enjoy!
