Estimating Sums: Fun Center Activity
This is just a creative way for students to practice estimating sums to the ten-thousand's place. In this activity, Little Piggy has been shopping. She has spent money at 7 different stores. Students will work with a partner pulling prices out of a bag (18 price cards are attached). They will pull each price out one time and plug it into a box on the skill sheet. Each price is used only once. They will then estimate the total cost that was spent at the store. Piggy purchases 2 items at 3 stores and 3 items at 4 stores. The sheet ends with an 'estimating the difference' problem. Please note that because students are working in separate partner groups, they will pull different prices out at different times, therefore the answers on the sheet will be different at every group. It is still very easy to grade though, so it makes for a fun class grade! This also makes a great activity for math workshop or for a center. It comes with a cover page incase you want to use it as a file folder activity.
