Estimating to find the answers to long division problems can be tricky; instead of rounding to the greatest place value, students must round the dividend to a compatible number, or a number that completes a basic fact with the divisor, and then divide.
To make this concept a little more engaging, we've developed the compatible numbers game! This game is designed to recreate the old Dating Game format, with the contestant (the divisor) looking for the most well-rounded (get it?) bachelor (the dividends) to estimate the answer to the division problem. Just like any date, these contestants and bachelors are checking for compatibility!
This game allows students to practice at their seat while you either play as a group, or choose individual students, to complete each round. The students will practice rounding dividends to find the most compatible match, choosing that match, and then dividing for a final estimated answer.
We've provided two versions of the game: a docucam edition, and a whiteboard edition, allowing everyone to play in the style they're most comfortable with.
This game also includes an answer sheet, character bios for each round of play (in the hopes that you'll be inspired to allow your true game host persona to make an appearance as you present each round :)), an independent practice page, and a "Make Your Own" page that allows students to create their own rounds of contestants and bachelors.
