Estimation is a skill for life. It helps build confidence, judgment, and decision making skills. It is also a skill that significantly improves with practice. At a very young age, children can learn how to estimate and compare numbers with the Estimation Jar weekly activity. I have done this activity with grades K-4 and the children love it. What’s more it reinforces a host of other math skills such as:
• Skip Counting
• Place Value
This activity on TPT includes a student estimation jar worksheet, directions on how to incorporate this activity in your classroom or home, and an excel class recording chart, perfect for the Smartboard that you can use to record student’s estimates, automatically generate a graph of the highest, lowest and average estimate, and automatically see who is closest.
All the best,
