Using real-life connections to estimate totals of money while shopping, students explore the different combinations of toys they can buy for their "brother" and "sister" for the holiday. Images captured from a Toys r Us 2012 catalog are used to give students options. This is a problem solving activity that encourages students to invest genuine interest as they explore different options. Encourage students to show their work and discuss their thinking with others. A few small challenges are asked of the students requiring them to think think further, and giving early finishers an extension to the activity.
***An accompanying SMART Board lesson that goes along with this activity will be available soon!
